More about Film

Project Background
Indonesia frequently adopts the label “archipelagic state.” Still, has the nation indeed considered the viewpoint of the people living on the islands? When nature can no longer sustain life, islanders may be forced to leave their homes and birthplaces.

On Sabu Island, East Nusa Tenggara (ENT), two generations of Lontar tappers face the dilemma of making ends meet. Ose Haga (38), the head of the household and the eldest son in his extended family, is forced to gamble by leaving his wife and children to tap palms on another island. Meanwhile, Iki Kitu (19) never dreams of attending college. When the opportunity for higher education arises, he hesitates to leave his source of income for a college seat—where he must start from scratch to catch up.

Islanders prioritize survival at the cost of losing their freedom and opportunity. It’s time to see the problems islanders face as ‘social justice’ issues. This film aims to invite you to join the struggle alongside islanders in realizing dreams from islands that refuse to sink into defeat.

Impact Goal
We want the islanders to view current limited life choices as a collective issue through a movement called:

!sland of Dreams

This movement will be established within the communities of the ENT islands (Sabu, Timor, Flores, Sumba, Alor, Rote, and Semau). We aim for adults and youths on the island to identify the root problem and seek solutions together.

Impact Distribution Strategy
!sland of Dreams will be actualized through Act!on Lab and Vis!on Lab activities— a combination of film screenings and creative leadership training based on the Active Citizen method, focusing on structural poverty issues and the impact of climate change.

  1. Adults in Act!on Lab
Mentoring youths in the Vis!on Lab and forming Active Citizen groups.
  2. Youths in V!sion Lab
Identifying career potentials suitable for the conditions of the ENT islands and mapping individual development plans in formal/non-formal education paths.
